Hog Hunting At The 7 Bar Ranch
For the 2003 hog hunt we ventured to the 7 Bar Ranch near
Dickens, Texas where we were well hosted by Mina Pellizzari and her son Dustin.
The group included myself, my son in law Todd, my grand son
Andy, and fellow hunters Dennis Malone and Ray ("Bub") Schill.
All hunters were successful, with myself, Todd and Bub taking
one hog each, Andy took two including the largest of the hunt at about 130
pounds and Dennis took three including the second largest of the bunch.

There were plenty of hogs at the 7 Bar including some much
larger than the ones we brought home. We sighted several 200 pound plus
hogs but had no opportunities to shoot.
Actually,
I did have one opportunity at a large hog. Bub told me about a group of
small hogs he had found bedded in a thicket. He suggested we sneak up for
some photos even though there were none in the group that either of us
considered big enough to shoot. I parked my rifle against a mesquite tree
and left it there for the last 100 yards of the stalk. The wind provided
good sound cover as we approached the thicket and we were able to stalk within
10 yards of the hogs. Several small hogs spotted us and jumped up giving
the warning. Out of the bush jumped a nice 200 pounder just as I snapped a
picture. With me packing a camera and Bub carrying his bow, the hog got
away clean! That is both the last time I park my rifle and the last time I
listen to Bub!

My hog was taken with a Schmidt & Rubin K31 in 7.5X55 Caliber Here
are some before and after pictures of a Wolf 154 grain bullet 7.62X39 recovered
