223 Throat

Here are some photos showing the depth of the throat on my .223 Handi.  I think this is grossly excessive.

This rifle has been free floated in the forearm and carefully shot with the rifle rested on the hinge.  Best case has been about 2 moa for five shots.  Ten shot groups invariably open to around 31/2 to 4 moa.

I'm not bashing the Handi here.  I have a 30-30/12 ga combo that shoots better than this 223.  Interestingly, the 30-30 throat is minimal!  OTOH, my son in laws .308 is also long throated and is pretty dismal in the accuracy dept as well.

Photo one shows a 55 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip bullet positioned up against the COAL gauge insert.  The base of the bullet is .162 from the case mouth!  This means that if this bullet is seated to one caliber depth within the case neck, it will have a .382 jump to the lands!  That seating depth includes the length of the boattail which measures about .058.  With a true caliber depth seating, the bullet would have to jump .44 inch!  If the bullet is seated to a true 1/8 inch depth of the bore riding surface of this bullet (not counting the boattail surface) the bullet still must jump .345 inch!

Photo 2 is a close up of the first photo.
